StarCraft 2 Units

As many of you may know, the new Starcraft has been out for almost two months now and it has gotten quite a bit of press. At first, everyone was a little upset that only the first part of a three piece set had been released, but everyone soon learned the Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty had more than enough to offer avid gamers until its companions hit the market. One of the major changes that will either make or break your gaming experience is that many of the Starcraft 2 units have been changed, upgraded, or just plain done away with. There are, of course, additional new units for gamers to try out. Some units are available only in single player scenarios, much to the dismay of some players.

First of all, if you aren’t familiar with the Starcraft story, then there are three races you need to get acquainted with. The Terrans are a group of exiled humans; convicts, criminals and volunteers. The Zerg are insect-like creatures who are enemies with the Protoss. The Protoss are a very advanced race with psionic ability. Knowing the strengths of each race will help you choose a winning strategy. There are different units that you can use for each race. Each unit will cost you a certain amount of minerals, gas, and supply, and some have additional specifications.

There aren’t as many Terran units as was expected when the game was released. Also, the absence of the Firebat in multiplayer has caused a few broken hearts. However, changes like the new Hellion, (the Jackal in StarCraft), which is equipped with a rather spectacular flamethrower, can more than make up for the lack of the favored Firebat. Also, the Raven has been quite a hit with its ability to make other useful weapons that operate independently. The trick to choosing the right units is having a solid strategy. You can’t walk into battle using a strategy that works great with Zerg units when you’re fighting using Terrans. Each race has its own abilities and limitations that correspond with their units. After all, units can range from one Terran Marine to a Battlecruiser. They don’t call it a real-time strategy game for nothing.

As for the Zerg, more units have been added, with a mixed review from gamers across the board. The Zerg have units that are built just like Terran and Protoss units, but they also have a few units that can be spawned, which is quite the asset. These are the Broodling, the infested Terran and the Changeling. Many changes have been made to Zerg units such as the Queen, which has become a relatively more defensive unit.

The Protoss units haven’t really gotten stronger physically, but there have been some interesting improvements with some of the units’ psychic and melee abilities. A lot of strategy when fighting Protoss has to do with using stealth. The Dark Templar and the Observer are both very good units for cloaking. The Protoss strategy requires heavy dependence on the Stalker and Immortal units.
