Are you looking to get into a new game? Do you like real time strategy or military games? StarCraft 2 was released only two months ago by Blizzard and has become increasingly popular with gamers everywhere. Its predecessor, Starcraft, set a standard in 1998 for real time strategy and with this new release, Blizzard is sure to deliver again. Not only is it innovative but also its multiplayer mode is downright addicting. It follows the storyline of the original Starcraft, with the Zerg, Portoss and Terrans at something of a standstill. However, Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty has some key differences in game-play to the previous Starcraft.
One of the most exciting differences is its Editor (which is referred to as Staredit in Starcraft). The Editor is a way for online players to actually make and publish their own maps and mods for skirmishes. StarCraft 2’s Editor is the first of its kind and outstrips other editors that Blizzard has produced for their other games.
In the multiplayer universe of StarCraft 2, anything is possible. You make the rules, you make the map, and you play the game. This massively competitive game has really drawn the crowd. Did you want to fight a battle with mostly ground units like the Zerg Queen? Well then, by all means, make a map covered in no fly zones and invite some friends to play on your field. Are you always winning skirmished against your noob friends? Then make an unbalanced battlefield and see if you can’t even the score. There are thousands of ways to create maps to your specifications on Starcraft 2 maps.
If you are new to the game, you can create maps with a few other new friends and just have little skirmishes to get the hang of how strategy plays into everything. After all, if you are trying to use a Protoss High Templar as a defensive unit, you probably need to work a little more on your technique and strategy before you jump into a huge campaign where all of the big dogs have come out to play.
There are all kinds of websites hosting map publishers so that you can share your map creations with others across the internet. This intriguing fact has changed many things about the multiplayer facet. The strategy must be vastly different when you are working with a map containing chasms and no fly zones than the strategy used to maneuver around in maps containing castles and bases. No map is the same and none can be used in the same way. It is really quite an exciting concept.
Some maps may be more enjoyable when plays 2 on 2 or 4 on 4, whereas other maps may be best when played 1 on 1 to the death. Maps can be structured for melee fights or campaigns or a variety of other scenarios. You can even make your map most suited for survivor fights, where the last one standing is the undeniable winner. The possibilities are absolutely endless. So, game on and start making those maps!
